Chapter Ten

A cold sweat breaks out across the back of my neck. There is no possible way this is true. I saw them drag her out of the room and once we recovered her body, there was a funeral service. I've made sure to keep Lex alive. I have him tied up right now in my basement. I don’t believe what he's saying, but if there is even a small bit of truth to his words I need to find out for sure.

I know a few people who would help me figure it out, even if it means exhuming a body that's been buried for years.

I put in a call to Lockley to see if he is still in contact with Drac. He's a member of the syndicate, but we rarely see him unless someone requests him. He has certain tastes that don't end when the body goes cold. He has more fun among the dead than with anyone at the safe house.

"You know, it might take me a few days to figure out where he is. It's not like I have a leash on the man. I'll do the best that I can for you. I have to ask you a question and I need you to be honest with me, Krsto."

"Have I ever been anything else?" I clench my jaw and wait for him to say whatever it is.

"This going to turn into a shit show? Do I need to tell everyone to lay low? I don't want no issues with Marko Juric or the police." This was a warning if I ever heard one. He was trying to make amends for the shit he put on me before, but that doesn't mean he was going to sit back and just let me ruin the reputation of the syndicate. Not if he could keep it from happening.

"I can't tell you that answer right now. I know that if I find out that this Hector fuck is still alive, and he has my woman, I'm not stopping to observe anyone's fucking rules. I'm going for him plain and simple."

"Alright. I hear you. I'll put Drac in contact with you." Lockley hangs up before I can say anything in return.

"Mmph… Mmm."

I can barely hear Lex screaming from down in the basement. He's been down there more than forty-eight hours already. Usually, any mark I have is dead within minutes, let alone a night. It's a novel experience, not one I would say that I want to experience for much longer.

A buzz on my phone alerts me to a new message on the dark web forum. I'm praying it's not a request because I'm in no frame of mind to actually take any work.

I open up my laptop and sign in through the appropriate channels so I can get my message.

I'm surprised to see it's Drac. I guess Lockley had a way of getting in contact with him after all.

"You looking for me.
